Teens 'N Transition
Teens ‘N Transition, a program out of POC, is focused on those that are about to experience one of the most significant, life altering transitions: College. This program is meant to empower high school students before they enter college with knowledge on how to be more proactive in safeguarding themselves. Through personal accounts, we hope to impact teens by raising awareness and promoting measures that reduce the risk of crime in college communities.
The Teens ‘N Transition Program was developed in June of 2007 and launched to various high schools throughout Westchester County, NY in the Spring of 2008. Since our launch, we have presented in all types of settings. It does not matter whether you may have a small classroom or a large auditorium, every presentation is treated equally and given the same amount of attention by our team.
Our Teens ‘N Transition Program has a different approach then other programs. Our Team, made up of college-aged presenters, talks ‘with’ the students rather than ‘at’ them. We feel that it is most beneficial to the students to be able to relate and feel comfortable with the presenters.
In addition to the video, images and PowerPoint displayed behind the presenters, our team provides the students with personal stories. These stories reinforce the risk reduction tactics discussed in the presentation and have been found to be the most impactful.
"What was most impactful was that I'm not hearing these issues from my parents. Hearing it from recent college graduates made an real impact." -Senior from Rye Country Day School, Rye, NY
"Even if you don't memorize the information, it remains in your memory." -Senior from Croton Harmon High School, Croton-on-Hudson, NY
"It really shows them the reality of college life aside form education." -Senior from Stepinac High School, White Plains, NY
The basic topics discussed in the presentation include:
- On and Off Campus Living
- Student Social Life
- The Influence of Drugs and Alcohol
- Sexual Assault and Abusive Relationships
- Available Campus Resources
Following the presentation, the students are encouraged to engage in an open discussion. We try to keep to the basic topics but in no way limit the students to any observations, stories, or questions they may have themselves (time permitting).
We preface our presentation by saying, “Some of the material we discuss may be difficult to comprehend or even to believe”. However, through the shared experiences of our team and other college students, the audience will learn much about realities of college life prior to arriving on campus. Our presentation provides the crucial facts about personal safety that a college bound student needs to hear.
